Finishing Terms
Inset
An inset is the fabric frame around the needlepoint canvas on a pillow.
Usually, an inset is between 1.5"-2.5", but they can be anywhere from 1"-4".

Piping
Piping (also known as a welt) is cording covered in fabric. This can be done either as "self-welt" or "contrast welt".
Self-welt: piping done in the same fabric as the rest of the pillow.
Contrast welt: piping done in a different fabric as the rest of the pillow.

Gusset
A pillow with a gusset (also known as a boxed pillow) has a piece of fabric between the front and back panels, like a cushion.
Typically, the gusset is between 1.5"-2.5".
Gussets typically have piping.

Ruffles
Ruffles are typically between 1.5"-2.5".

Applique
Irregularly shaped canvases can be turned into pillows by stitching the canvas directly on top of the front fabric piece.
I typically add cording around the canvas to ensure no blank canvas or threads are showing.

Stand-ups
Stand-ups can be made in 2 ways
Acrylic stand-up
An acrylic foot is inserted in between the cookies.
Gusset stand-up
Foam is used to make a 3-D stand up, you can add feet or let it stand alone.

Traditional ornament
Ornaments
Ornaments are typically finished in the traditional style with 2 pieces of batting on the front, and 1 piece of batting on the back.
Ornaments can also be finished with a flat-back, where there is puff on the front and no puff on the back.

Hanging Signs
Hanging signs are typically finished in the flat-back style, with 2 pieces of batting on the front, and no batting on the back.
Hanging signs can also be finished puffy, where it is sewn together like a mini pillow.
You can also add ruffles or self-welt to hanging signs!
